Developers diaries #23

City Car Driving 2.0

City Car Driving 2.0 is a driving simulator designed to help novice drivers master driving in a setting as close to reality as possible.

You will find only an extensive list of questions and answers. For your convenience, the questions are classified into categories.
Important and Frequently Asked Q&A

Will we ever see multiplayer?
We are aware that many of you want to see multiplayer, but at the moment unfortunately we don’t have the resources to fully implement it alongside with keeping up interest and performance for each player. We are still holding our position: we don’t rule out adding multiplayer mode in the future, but we can’t speak of exact dates yet.
Are game pad, steering wheel, and other controllers supported?
Yes, they are. The game is mainly geared towards steering wheels, but the keyboard and mouse are still the most popular PC input devices, we can’t leave these out. We also realize game pads are a convenient gaming controller. This is why we are adding support of all the most popular input devices from the very beginning. As of now, we are not able to name any models. If we have any issues on this matter at the time of early-access game release, you can expect a detailed guide on fully supported controllers, controllers requiring configuration, and those hardly compatible with UE and, therefore, not supported by the game
Will we see different regions, countries, etc. in CCD 2.0?
For early access, we will be releasing a single region, an endless summer Mediterranean city. Later on, we will be expanding and adding game locations.
Will there be TrackIR support?
No support is expected for early access. Unfortunately, we don’t have the resources to implement full support, so we can’t make any promises.
Will there be VR support?
Same deal as with TrackIR, though, chances of VR support are higher since we have already developed a VR mode in the original CCD.
Will there be an expansion of social interaction with the audience? E.g., a discord server for discussing the game or contacting the developers directly
Yes, there will. At the moment, we are preparing a discord server, and as soon as we are ready to launch it, expect a global announcement. Apart from the discord server, we will be improving our social media presence and be more open to the public. This has been taking a long time, since we are putting all our efforts into development, and interactions with the community other than our Developers’ Diaries and on-and-off exchanges in the comments are quite time-consuming
Apart from exercises, will CCD 2.0 keep focus on abidance by Traffic Rules?
Yes, we consider Traffic Rules to be an important part of the gameplay and aim to deepen interaction between the player and Traffic Rules. This mechanics lays at the foundation of the game, there’s no way we would give that up.
Will you offer flexible adjustment of traffic density, number of pedestrians, or weather conditions like in the original CCD?
Traffic will be dynamic, just like weather.
Is Steam Workshop support planned?
Yes, it is. We want to give players the opportunity to share their own modifications with maximum convenience.
In the end, is this a simulator or a game?
Despite the fact that we are with Forward and are developing City Car Driving 2.0, we are a separate team from simulators focused specifically on the game.
What about licensed cars?
We do not support car licensing. We aim to make all cars as realistic as possible and as close to the original models as possible. As for brands, patents, and other specifications, we won’t be offering those in CCD 2.0 even after early access.
Why will the game be released in early access?
We don't have the financing required to create a large-scale car simulator. As we all know, in the game industry car simulators are not that popular, and almost every niche in this genre is filled. We would love to develop a prominent large-scale car simulator to take its market position, however, that would require much more financing than we have currently. This is why we are aiming for early access. Another reason is that we expect to receive your feedback and plan the upcoming release together.

New Q&A

Where do the strange things we see time to time in the Developers’ Diaries come from? E.g., muted videos, or flying cars without any explanations.
It is as simple as us forgetting to edit certain parts of the text after proof reading the Diaries. This is why you will see stylistic and grammatical “artifacts” time to time. You often act as our editors and point out the mistakes for us to correct on-the-fly. We would like to thank you immensely for this! As for muted videos, flying cars, etc., our Diaries are not intended for marketing as a direct advertising tool. We use the Diaries to share the development progress, receive feedback, interact with the community, show the game as is without any fake glamor. That is, we aim to get closer and more understandable.
Every now and again you keep asking the community for ideas. What are you planning to do with these?
We are making a list of ideas and expected additions to the game for future development. The best ideas or the ones fitting perfectly into the gameplay will be implemented. After early-access game release, we will continue publishing our Developers’ Diaries and will announce implemented community ideas in one of those. Currently, early access will feature drunk driving offered by the community.
In Diaries #22, the last frame with the traffic where a car changes lanes abruptly is disappointing. Such reckless drivers are annoying in the first part. Can you make changing lanes smoother and longer?
We can’t promise to solve all such issues in early-access release. We have postponed the game to solve AI issues, among other things.
Is the majority of your development team from CIS?
Yes, whole team are CIS residents.
What about the soundtrack and radio?
We are aiming at least to reproduce the functionality of the original City Car Driving. So, the game will definitely feature a soundtrack and support connection to streaming services (such as a 24-hour radio website broadcasting music) for listening to the real-life radio in the game. As for embedded radio tracks, we will try and prepare some music.
Will we be able to turn off HUD?
You will be able to turn off HUD if desired. This excludes game mechanics UI such as car wash, workshop, or gas station. We believe that installation of complete game functionality on the phone would be undesirable for the player.
Can you make NPCs livelier? They feel like those in GTA Vice City.
We demonstrate implementation and development of pedestrians in our Diaries. Of course, we will try to make them livelier.
Now and then you are asked about the game contrast, it’s too colorful. Have you tried more pastel shades?
We have. This would have a visible negative impact on setting. All the magic and vibes of the locations would be lost. Anyway, you should have noticed changes in the game’s coloring throughout the Diaries, balance between realism and stylization is of critical importance for us in the terms of graphics and setting.
Will we see railways and trains in the game?
No, not in early-access release definitely. In future releases, we are thinking about an alternative, but we can’t tell you more yet.
Will you offer a closed beta testing?
We will. We will announce enrollment of players in advance.
What have you decided to do with the taxis in the end?
There will be no taxis in early-access release. We have been focusing on finishing other mechanics and have postponed the taxi driver career for later. Particularly, as we understand the market offers taxi driver games, so we aim to offer to car lovers a different experience.

Updated Q&A

Will we be able to get out of the car and walk around the city?
Old Answer: No, currently, we don’t see any point in creating this mechanic for a car simulator.
New Answer: This was the answer we gave in the previous Diaries. However, it requires an update. We find this mechanics controversial, and it depends on the position the community takes after the early-access release
Will CCD 2.0 simulate damages to the car leading to its malfunction?
Old Answer: It will, in future Diaries we will definitely tell you how we want to implement this functionality.
New Answer: o Here we would like to note that in early-access release this will implemented be as simplified as possible, even without visual damages. However, we intend to focus on damages and vehicle customizing in the very first updates of the game.
Is the system of fatigue, hunger, and so on planned?
Old Answer:No, we consider this an excessive complication for a real and living person who needs to rest and eat themselves especially when playing a car simulator that requires concentration.
New Answer: o This is one of the changes to the perception and perspectives of the game. We still believe this to be a complication and an excess for a living person, so we are trying to keep balance. At least we have introduced fatigue together with drunk driving, we’ll see how the community receives these mechanics. We are quite aware that in other car simulators with fatigue this is usually turned off. We will consider your feedback.
How many people are there on your team?
Old Answer: Currently, we are fifteen. Initially, CCD 2.0 was developed by no more than three people
New Answer: In half a year, we have already eighteen (18) people on our team.
How long has CCD 2.0 been in development?
Old Answer: One and half year; before this, we have carried out research and created various prototypes.
New Answer: By early-access release, it will have been two years exactly.

Legacy Q&A

Where is Russia?
Russia is in the original City Car Driving; we changed the setting and mood of the new game to add new features to City Car Driving. In the future, long after early-access release, when adding new locations, we will introduce Russia
Will creating and adding custom cars be supported in City Car Driving 2.0?
Yes, it will. This will have little differences from the original City Car Driving.
Why do you consider it to be a new game rather than an updated original City Car Driving?
We have changed the engine and gameplay, and introduced new mechanics, this is why Car Driving 2.0 is not just a “global update”, but a new game
Will creating and adding custom maps be supported in City Car Driving 2.0?
We would really like to offer such support especially given that our users would love to create custom maps. However, map editor is not expected in the early-access release.
Will we see cars from the original CCD in 2.0?
No, we want to make both games unique, so we will not be reproducing vehicles. You will see only new cars in CCD 2.0
Will the sounds be from the original CCD or different?
With the transition to UE, the sounds in the game will be changed.
What will happen to the original CCD?
It will remain with the players, in the form they are used to, we are not replacing and definitely not taking the game away from players. We leave open the possibility of small updates for the original City Car Driving, but for now we are focusing all our efforts on the development of City Car Driving 2.0.
Do you plan to add motorcycles in CCD 2.0?
In early access, definitely not.
Will we see trailers in CCD2?
Not in early access, but we will be adding these after game release
And what about trucks and buses in the traffic?
Not in early access, but we have an alternative we will cover in our Diaries on vehicles in the game.
Will you offer support of telemetry, eye tracking, etc.?
Not in early access.
Is voice navigation to be expected?
We understand this is an important and interesting feature of a gameplay, however, this is not to be expected for early access.
Do you plan additional traffic lights sections?
We already have these in CCD 2.0
Will we see construction works on the roads?
Yes, but we are not ready to disclose the details yet.
Will you be offering a demo?
Highly unlikely.
Why are the streets so clean and perfect?
Cracks, rubbish, dirt, etc., are final outcomes of level art. Currently, we are working on the contents of locations, and after this is finished, we will proceed to the details.
Will cars have economy mode and sport mode?
No, these modes will not be supported by early-access cars we are developing for CCD 2.0.
Will the game feature electric cars?
In early-access release, we are focusing on common, typical cars, so there will be no electric cars. However, as the latter are becoming more and more popular, we do not rule out adding them, taking into account that electric cars are trending.
Are you planning a release for consoles or just PCs?
Currently, no consoles, but if City Car Driving 2.0 car simulator gains popularity, we would love to extend to these devices.
And how are things going with cloud gaming?
We are neither offering this currently. This is why, among other things, we are doing our best to streamline the game for outdated and slow PCs.
Will there be microtransactions?
Here comes the first question where our “No” will sound reassuring. No, microtransactions are not planned and will not happen in CCD 2.0
What DLCs are expected?
Currently, none. Before going as far as DLCs, we should release the game for early access, and develop it into a full release unlocking all the potential we have planned for CCD 2.0
Why your answer to many requests with “No, we won’t”?
The vision of the game has already been planned, so currently, we are laying the foundation for the future. We are collecting all feedback, including on drunk driving mode, on Russia, and on Traffic Rules in the UK.
What about the graphics?
We have optimized the game for different devices. For example, the teaser was recorded with “default” settings, not even with medium graphics settings. Since then, it has changed for the better. We are continuously sharing the appearance of the game “as of now”, so before the game is released for early access, we will definitely have demonstrated the final appearance of the graphics
Why are Diaries published only once every two weeks, and videos, even short ones, have appeared just recently?
We do not have a promotion and marketing team. All videos and screenshots are taken by level designers at work. Most of the Diaries that do not involve serious technical issues are written by our game designer. Our tester proof reads those, and the project manager re-checks the message by reading the Diaries again before posting. We write all the Diaries in between our main work duties.
Will there be extension of dangerous situations? If yes, of what kind?
We are planning to extend dangerous situations, but cannot say yet in what form. We don't want to disappoint you if it isn't included in early access eventually.
Will there be biofuel?
No, not in early access. Same as with electric cars.
Will there be different numbers of gasoline (92, 95, 98)?
Yes, this is one of the earliest features that we have introduced into the game.
Will prices differ at different gas stations? Will prices at gas stations change depending on the time?
If the game designer remembers to configure the parameters :)
On what engine is the game developed?
Unreal Engine 5
When will minimum requirements be out?
We are streamlining the game. It is still unclear, but we will definitely notify you of system requirements in advance.
What about the price?
As we have mentioned, the price is yet unclear as well. We’d love to make the game affordable for everyone, but at the same time keep our potential for developing the game.
What’s up with customizing?
This is not planned in early access. Neither is the system of damages. However, we realize its importance for car enthusiasts and will be definitely adding it later.
If you plan on adding further cars to the game, how do you feel about voting for the community choices?
We plan on extending our car fleet, and this is an outstanding idea. After we release the game for early access, we’ll be launching such events and votes.
Will we see an intercity road?
For early access we are developing and building a single city. Next, we’ll switch to the location, so to say, “upon request of the community”. This is why although we agree this is a cool idea, we cannot promise we’ll start with an intercity road. (However, we are offering a country road in early access!)
When is the fully-featured gameplay video coming?
It is still underway, and we cannot announce exact dates. We should focus on development of the game. We try to share the development progress with you in as much detail as possible. Game marketing is not a burning issue for us, so before we start actively advertising and showing the game, we want to make sure that we have made a great car simulator.
Will trucks and buses be playable?
No, not in early access definitely. Perhaps in the future we will expand our fleet.
Will there be cockpit support like for sim racing?
No, we are not about sim racing and adding such support would mean unjustified expenses for us.
Will there be an initial test to get driver's license?
Yes, surely. As we have mentioned in previous Diaries, without getting a license, you will not be able to engage in some of the gaming activities.
What about a full-featured scheme of traffic fines?
Of course, there will be fines that you will need to pay, because there will be economy in the game. We couldn’t leave fines out of CCD 2.0, these are a key feature of the game.
After changes in physics, will drifting be possible in the game?
We do not encourage unsafe driving in any way, and we do not advise you to do so. (Yes, it will be possible. That’s a given for a game about cars! :) There are no plans for rear-wheel drive player cars in the first early-access release, but we will be adding those in our first major patch.
Will we see the police?
Maybe. We didn’t look that far ahead. If we go with this, it will definitely be before full release of the game but not in the first major patches.
Developer logs are published every two weeks. Don’t miss them!
