Developers diaries #21

City Car Driving 2.0

City Car Driving 2.0 is a driving simulator designed to help novice drivers master driving in a setting as close to reality as possible.

Disclaimer: there are currently a lot of elements in the game that should only be seen by the developers. For example, the “Select starting point” menu or the boundaries of triggers on the location. Also, while we are carrying out optimization, all car traffic consists of one car model. Soon we will show the game the way you will see it in early access. Enjoy your reading and watching:) [previewyoutube=z8fVAMXsM84;full][/previewyoutube] There is a forest area in front of the city that you can drive through in a car. This is 3.6 kilometers of country road near a picturesque lake. In addition to the forest and the road, we also demonstrate a working version of the speedometer, which displays the main indicators of the car’s condition: the parking brake, headlights being on or off, the seat belt being fastened, and how much fuel is left in the gas tank. Here, we forgot to turn off the parking brake at first, but then we realized that showing it this way was even more interesting. [previewyoutube=px9_neJhW5M;full][/previewyoutube] The GIF shows the first street you can see as you are driving into the city. In the developer’s log No. 20, we already showed it from a different angle in one of the screenshots. Here, we demonstrate changing the camera view and answer the question, “Why weren’t there any screenshots from the driver’s perspective?” At the moment, we are creating rear view mirrors, a steering wheel model, and the displaying of all the HUD data on the dashboard. So in the game demos, we try not to show the view from the interior as much. [previewyoutube=KrmesQ40Jqo;full][/previewyoutube] On the same street, we demonstrate that a camera from any view can be rotated freely. Also, the whole team really wanted to show you the animation of a female pedestrian. As with similar cars on the road, while we are optimizing, the variety of pedestrians is limited. [previewyoutube=1gkJYsPKdRc;full][/previewyoutube] This is the first turn after driving into the city. As we talked about in our logs dedicated to the level design of the city, the roads in CCD 2.0 are much narrower than in the car simulators available in the market. This was done, first of all, to diversify the driving gameplay and, in our opinion, to enhance driving skills. At the end of the GIF, we get into a small accident. [previewyoutube=t9ncEHeuN1I;full][/previewyoutube] A few more animations of pedestrians and views from city roads. Now pedestrians move very unevenly and occasionally “freeze,” stopping in place. This will be fixed by the Early Access release. [previewyoutube=_RfIb2HpYOM;full][/previewyoutube] We end our log No. 21 with the same thing that we showed in our log No. 1. The mechanics of refueling a car have not changed, yet, we have prepared a working interface. We have added notifications with hints to all mechanics: where to drive up, the sequence of actions. You will be able to hide them, and nothing will interfere with your enjoying the process. The car wash was updated in the same way. Here is a link to the video of the car wash. In it, we will tell you about the reasons for this decision. Don’t miss it!
