Hello everyone,
Along with our first devlog that shortly explains Pyrene’s gameplay, we wanted to share with you why, according to us, Pyrene bring something new to card-based games, through innovative and varied mechanics!
What genre is Pyrene exactly?
It’s always been challenging for us to describe what Pyrene is about. Over the months and years, we have concluded that the core of the gameplay is:

Its fast pace as you crawl through various zones and biomes

Solving the zones like a puzzle

Replayability, through a permadeath system in which you keep your progression partly
And secondly comes:

Extending, improving and rearranging your deck of cards!
Don’t get us wrong: cards remain essential in Pyrene! But, by putting the spotlight on the cards only, we miss out on many fundamental aspects.
What are the cards for then?
First off, most of the elements in the game are in the shape of cards. Characters, NPCs, enemies & bosses, buildings… Everything that appears on the tiles is card-shaped.
But we want to rather talk about the equipment cards! They play an essential role, since they’ll help you to define a strategy to defeat challenging creatures and bosses. Among the hundred of equipment cards, you’ll find:

cards that cause damage or apply effects on enemies.

cards that heal you and add resources (gold, spirit, supplies and so on).

cards that shake up other cards – for example swapping position, pushing or mixing up other cards...

corrupted cards that give you things but against a slight drawback.
Depending on the biome, you might need different cards with specific effects, while always trying to keep the balance of your health and supplies.
Managing your deck is key
As you’ll open chests and build a nice deck of cards, rearranging and improving them will be crucial!

You’ll meet various NPCs and elements that allow you to do so: Jentil applies an effect on one card, Truffandec duplicates a card, the anvil will buff them against gold, the Erge Altar applies the effects of talismans on your deck.
