Rebots is in the Wholesome Games Steam Celebration between Aug 15-21 🐎

Rebots

Rebots is a first-person automation game with an expansive universe to explore. Using intelligent(ish) rebots, you can gather resources, terraform planets, and scan all of the things. Traverse the galaxy in the name of space capitalism!

Hej Reboteers, We are very excited to announce that Rebots has been selected to participate in the Wholesome Games Steam Celebration starting right now from the 15th August until the 21st! Here’s the event page: Wholesome Games Celebration Now onto that devlog - as we are preparing for launch, we thought it’d be a great idea to share a series of posts presenting different aspects of Rebots - so let’s jump into it Game Pillars & Project Goals. Every project no matter how small or large needs pillars & goals to successfully align the team on the vision for the game. In this short post, I’ll be presenting the core pillars of Rebots and what experience we want players to have while playing the game. The 3 pillars of Rebots are Player Agency, Alien Community & Galactic Economy Player Agency means having access to a diverse cast of Rebots which come from the passion of creating AI characters not as enemies for the player to destroy, but to work alongside to achieve goals together. Player Agency also means tackling varied missions in the order the player wishes - whether those are settling aliens on asteroids, improving their habitat or completing favors for Spaceport Citizens. Player Agency is also present in the procedural generation of our asteroid field and asteroids which allows the player to explore at their own pace in whatever direction they see fit and adapting to the different challenges. Alien Community is the presence of a set of alien factions with interesting and funny dialogue. The two major goals of the player in Rebots is 1) to restore the Spaceport once they crash their spaceship in the intro sequence and 2) to help aliens find and create homes on asteroids. These two goals directly contribute to the Alien Community pillar and also provide a visual sense of progress as the various parts of the Spaceport are restored/unlocked as the player completes Favors. Galactic Economy finally is about the player’s own progression through the Rebots Corporation which is both a way to unlock content and also a slight satire on how businesses work and is represented in the various fancy titles the player receives. Galactic Economy is also reflected in the core gameplay loop of creating automated loops of Rebots on various asteroids to transform them, extract and create resources, build permanent structures with the Constructor and finally also change the climate. All these pillars contribute to the following experience we want players to have in Rebots:

Players should feel that they are terraforming an asteroid for the better
Players should feel they are building a community
Rebots is a relaxing but engaging experience
The world of Rebots is cartoony and filled with humor
Players should have a sense of discovery, learning and mastery
Players should feel like zero to hero by shaping their own fortune in the Rebots Corporation
Thanks for tuning in, we’ll be back with more of these posts and let us know in the comments if you’re interested in hearing about any aspect of Rebots. Cheers, Regö and the FlatPonies team
