Feature Focus - Clothing & Inventory

Alone

An isometric survival RPG without the survival. Collect resources and craft items and weapons. Build a settlement on your island. Hunt in the darkest forests, or slay the undead in the cursed crypts. Explore, claim and restore the blighted islands and become a Jarl worthy of the sagas.

With the next milestone coming soon (an announcement is closer than you'd think) - it's a good time to take an in-depth view at some of the changes coming. In this feature focus - clothing and inventory. Clothing in Alone has been a purely functional consideration. You start off wearing civilian clothing, and then as you make armour and helmets, the character dresses up in them. Since this milestone is focused on the peaceful portion of the game, it was time to change it. For a start, you no longer start dressed in fine garments, but something a little more suited to a castaway Unlike previously, equipping armour won't change your clothing - you now have two sets of clothing as it were - clothes you wear for combat, and clothes that you wear when safe on your home or claimed islands. In order to change your home clothing, you'll need to use a wardrobe, which is included in the house building. Using this item opens a simple interface to let you change your hat, pants, cloak, and shirt. By default you have a small choice of pants and shirts, but the rest must be unlocked. And that's where the tailor comes in. Clothing has been subdivided into 4 levels, and two types (clothing and accessories) - you don't need to create every single piece of clothing individually. By making and using a specific clothing set, you unlock more options at the wardrobe. Similar to armour and weapons, the more exotic clothing requires more exotic materials to make. Of particular interest is the Noble Tier of items which uses Silk - which is a good only accessible from traders With quite a few items to choose from, it'll be interesting to figure out what suits your character best... So, let's talk about something a little less colourful but just as useful - inventory. Previously most buildings came with a chest which you could store items in. The chest had a limited but relatively generous capacity, and normally you'd try to store the appropriate items in the appropriate building - say putting all the stone in the mason's workshop. But since it's a bit annoying to try to remember where everything is, and since the limited capacity wasn't fun either - the whole system has been changed in this milestone. Now all the chests on the island are linked to one central storage. So you could, for instance, put wood into the chest in your house, and then take it out in the chest at the carpenter's. It's also of unlimited size - there are page controls at the bottom to allow you to scroll through all the contents. But since having a lot of items might make it unwieldy, it also comes with filter tabs. Clicking on that tab will filter only items of a specific type, to help you find exactly what you're looking for. There are some exceptions to this system. Each island has it's own storage - so you can't teleport items across islands this way. The ship hold is it's own storage however, so you can use that to ferry items across like previously. Hopefully this system will remove some of the annoyances of looking for a specific item. And that's it for this Feature Focus. The milestone is very nearly done and an announcement for the release date will be going out soon...
