Welcome back to a new devlog for Borneo: A Jungle Nightmare. In the last devlog, we talked about one of the first memories we'll be playing in Borneo: A Jungle Nightmare. Today we're taking a closer look at another important aspect of the game: the cursor. As Borneo: A Jungle Nightmare is a graphical adventure, the cursor is a bit of a bridge that connects the player's actions to the game itself - if you think about it, it's exactly the way we interact with the game world. So we started exploring different options in order to find the perfect cursor for the theme of our game, and after having a chat with our artist SoloMacello, we started evaluating the first ideas. As you can see in the image above, the first five proposals have all a strong connection to the theme and the spirit of the game, each with their own pros and cons. In option A we find the eye that is already taken up in the official logo of the game. Beautiful, but maybe too much linked to only one contextual action that the player performs inside Borneo, that is the Observe action. Options B, C and D are certainly the ones that come closest, in form, to the idea of a pointer. But even in this case, reflecting on the actions available to the player, we felt that something else would be needed. In fact, in options C and D we mainly thought about a "territorial" issue, that is to say: although adhering to the shape of the cursor, the spear seemed to be too much linked to an exotic setting, which could have clashed in places of the game other than the jungle of Borneo, while the bone did not seem to us to be able to properly perform all the actions available to the player - we are talking about the Pickup action, for example -. This last issue is something that also affects option B, of course. Having a severed finger as a cursor would have been perfect, but how could we have justified the execution of an action like the Pickup? We had to find a system more suitable for our needs. So, after having another chat with SoloMacello, we came up with the solution: What you see above is, in fact, the cursor we decided to use in Borneo: A Jungle Nightmare: creepy, isn't it? And that's it for this week, too. Before we say goodbye, though, we want to share another little glimpse of the river scene, this time with the addition of various graphic effects, especially regarding the water movement.
