Welcome in our new (fictional) testimony!
Story #8: Homeless man who suffered hypothermia
"When I was a kid I used to play with a miniature ambulance. I took it everywhere with me and dreamt up stories where I rescued people who needed help. Life had different plans for me and now I live away from civilized society. Unhoused living is never a choice, but life has a funny way of making choices for you. Sure, I get by day by day finding just enough to eat and a shelter to sleep at night. Under these conditions, the law of the city isn’t so different from the law of the jungle! In the course of my travels, I’ve managed to gather enough gear to be able to sleep outdoors without too many worries. But, you know they say, “When it rains, it pours". It was just after I lost my bag, and everything in it when the weather unleashed its worst. I couldn’t say what temperature it was outside, but I’ve rarely felt as cold. The rain, combined with the raging wind, meant that the few free shelters were useless. There are people whose job it is to make the rounds to check whether people in my situation have the basics to survive. Fortunately for me, they found me and called an ambulance. I had stopped shivering, which as I understand it is a sign of advanced hypothermia. In the end, the ambulance took me to hospital. It looked just like the toy that I had lost long ago, and on the way, I found it funny to imagine that it had now come back for me."
