In the past six months, we've been beavering hard and making many significant changes. I actually thought we'd aim for a 1.0 release that had a great deal less content and functionality than we do now.
I really didn't plan to put any space monsters or fighters into the game before 1.0. However, the game's new, more universal and flexible approach to player ships meant that after building out the full 3d controls, it wasn't much more work to make player fighters, so they went in.
Similarly, the space monster was just a simple (but very configurable) use of some specialized drawing code, and a bit of scripting.
Along the way, we've been conquering bugs in every aspect of the code, making the network layer, the 3d graphics, and the GUI all better and prettier.
