Welcome to our third developer log, this week we'll be showcasing the wonderful work of our lead art designer focusing on world building, environment and atmosphere.
Firstly, we thought it necessary to showcase the artworks first designed years ago for the mobile version, since these assets mark the start of the unique and colourful style of art we have continued to expand and evolve all the way into today. However, when we started working on The Grugs: Origins, we no longer had the performance and size limitations that mobile platforms have, and because of this we did our best to improve on each and every visual element.

Secondly, the games that inspired us to bring The Grugs to PC are known for their incredible visual perspective, with each scene having an immense depht to it. We wish to replicate this with multiple foreground and background layers, to essentially make the world feel more 3D, even though practically its a 2D platformer.

Another thing we wanted to include was a reoccuring motive in every biome, for the first one the spiral like shape that can be seen on checkpoint stones, rocks, trees, bushes, and many other assets. We believe that when it comes to visual clarity and giving the player a sense of belonging, reoccuring shapes and images help sell the idea that the game world is a familiar, life-like place, which helps create an immersive world.
We will be giving further looks into how the visuals of the game are developing in the following weeks, focusing on the design of caves and other interior elements, and designs for the other biomes as well, we also have more content to show regarding the other members of the family, enemies and even bosses, so stay tuned!
If you wanna see our artists work live, here's a small showcase of their work process:
