DevDiary #1: The Stars Our Destination

Cryospace - survival horror in space

You are not a soldier. Not a fighter. Just an ordinary maintenance guy. Yet you have to fight. And you are forced to run. But chiefly: you must help the frozen crew survive on a spaceship. You are the only one who can save others. You are made a hero against your will. You become a leader. A slayer.
DevDiary #1
Every journey starts with the first step… And the first step for CryoSpace is... one of the best hard science fiction books of the mid of Twenty Century. “The Stars My Destination” by American writer Alfred Bester - first edition 1956. The story is set in the 24th or 25th century (that one varies between editions of the book) when humans have colonized the Solar System. In this novel, you will find many ideas that a few decades later evolve into cyberpunk. But that is a completely different story. The book is set in the world where "jaunting" - personal teleportation - is possible, at least on Earth, not in Space. At the beginning of the novel the life of the main hero, Gully Foyle is at a dead end. Why? Because he is the only survivor on the destroyed spaceship. He has to fight for survival, crawling through the derelict, looking for oxygen. Normal uneducated, unskilled, unambitious man trying to live no matter what. That’s how this story begins… The vision of lone survival on the wreckage haunted us for many years, as we read the book in the 80s. And finally, it evolved into something a little bit different… or maybe not, because in CryoSpace you will find more than a few ideas from “The Stars My Destination”. So if you're wondering what we were doing lately - we were creating the final storyline for “CryoSpace”, re-reading and re-looking books, comics, and movies. Once again we reached out for the “Aliens” franchise, classic SF books like “Non-Stop” by Brian Aldiss or “2001: A Space Odyssey” by Arthur C. Clarke, and, of course, a few Polish novels which also inspired us. Now we are making the next step - moving from storyline into gameplay! And PS: Do you recommend any other movies, books, comics, or games that we should look into? Let us know in the comments, as we are eager to know what Cryospace reminds you of!
