Keeping the Defenders alive

Base Defense

Base Defense is a cooperative and single-player modification for Half-Life, based on horde-style and RPG systems.

I decided to make some news about what's going on with the mod. I have finally found some time to continue the work and it has really good results. I get a lot of messages and reviews like "dis gaem is ded", but the truth is it will become dead only when I say. It was never a game with huge audience and it started as a little LAN-party project to play with my friend. Anyway the mod found its fans and they suggested me I should go for Steam. With the help of my little but great fan base I finally made it to Steam. So here we are, we have a mod with some of Steam features implemented which is something really unusual for HL mods. It's free and it gets updated. Its author is listening to the players and adds new features based on their suggestions. There are a few servers available which are not empty, but free. They are free for you and your friends. Isn't it nice? Alright. As I said I listen to my players, so the next key feature will be difficulty selection. A bit of story: there was a time when I used standard HL difficulty settings, but then it was changed when I got a heavy criticism about "not challenging" gameplay. I completely forgot about newcomers and started to raise the difficulty until it became the current (1803) version, which is really difficult (pretty challenging too). Why it wasn't changed for a long time is because I didn't have any problems with difficulty and I was sure everyone could make some training to get better results. I was wrong, so I decided to return difficulty modes in their new incarnation. The players will be able to see the difference between difficulties not only in the game process, but in specific numbers too. When player joins the game it will show him the menu which will inform him of running events, server message and the difficulty setting of course. There are only two difficulty levels: Softcore (SC) and Hardcore (HC). HC is the same as current game is, but with little tweaks to make it more fair (wait for change log). SC could be described as a half of HC numbers, but has its own features. More specific information about these difficulties you will get in the game. Save file compatibility was saved and the old file will be recognized as it was saved in HC mode. Yeah, you can't load SC character in HC mode and vice versa. Updated "Load character" menu will show you the difficulty save file has and also will gray out the characters which were saved in another mode. New version is in beta testing stage. If everything will be fine then I will make a release soon.
