This is a BIG update, not just the readily visible new features but I added a lot of backend systems that will allow me to add more things and gameplay elements to Farmington County. This update is very foundational; I believe there is now a solid base to the game that will allow me to add bigger and better things, faster. Be sure to check out the Tutorial section again to see how the new features work.
Anyway, what's in this update? Let's start with the major stuff:
GUNS! And Shooting! And Targets! - I designed a shooting system from scratch. It uses actual physics-based bullets, and all guns have different characteristics. I am planning to add more guns in the future, right now there are 4 types - a pistol, a shotgun, a semi auto rifle, and a fully automatic rifle. You can buy these guns at the Gun Shop, next to the Gas Station.
I have also included 3 different, specifically designed targets to practice your shooting on. Because the bullets are physics-based, the targets all move and behave realistically. They're a good way to practice your top-down shooting skills. You can build these on your farm so you can have your own firing range. They can be found under the building menu, in the Utilities category.
There is also a ready-to-use shooting range next to the new Gun Store.
A note about the guns: from the beginning I envisioned Farmington County to not only be a farming game but a full on, grown up country lifestyle simulation. Your Farm, and Farming, will always be the focus of Farmington County but I aim to give the players a lot of things they can do that is still keeping with the theme and the overall feel of the game.
I love making this game and I want it to reach its full potential and in my head (and notes) I've already mapped out the road this game's development is going to take. I'm willing to take huge risks with the game design, and I've thought things through and it will just feel a lot more authentic if there are more 'grown up' elements to the game, like crime, law enforcement, and adult relationships, just as there are in real life. Don't worry though, it won't be fantasy farming, you won't engage in bloodbaths every time you go out of the farmhouse, you won't be shooting dragons out of the sky. Everything will be keeping in theme with the rest of the game and combat will always be organically optional.
Back to the update - the New Inventory System! You can now carry around multiple tools on your person. Does he put it his pockets? In his pants? Under his shirt? Who knows, but again I tried my best to maintain the current feel of the game where storage, transportation and organization is still key. The Inventory system is based on item sizes, some will take more space in your inventory and some will be smaller. Practically, this means you'll be able to carry around 1-2 tools on your person plus a seed bag. You'll still need your vehicles to do large scale, actual hauling.
Bigger Map! More Exploration! - so the map is almost 3x bigger which is a big reason as to why the update took so long - a lot of it was optimization. It's mostly sparse right now but I have a very good idea of what's going to be in those new areas. I also hand painted some new trees, and they look so much more natural and lush now. For the next update I will also change the graphics for the crops and weeds so they all look bushier and more natural.
There's also a bunch of other things: Controls are changed a little, I did a ton of optimization (3x bigger map and more stuff under the hood at basically the same performance level).
Thank you to everyone for the support! I have great plans for Farmington County. Up next will be Farming-focused content, I will announce what exactly the next update will be in the Community discussion. Thanks again!
