Wars Across The World: Cortenuova 1237

Cortenuova 1237 is based on the conflict between Guelphs and Ghibellines in XIII century Italy. The former, led by Holy Roman Emperor Frederick II, want to restore Imperial power, while Guelphs, led by Pope Gregory IX, are opposing restoration of same and trying to break Emperor’s allies in Italy.

Cortenuova 1237 is based on the conflict between Guelphs and Ghibellines in XIII century Italy. The Ghibellines, led by Holy Roman Emperor Frederick II, are attempting to restore Imperial power south of the Alps while Guelphs, led by Pope Gregory IX, are opposing restoration of imperial power in the north and are trying to break Emperor’s allies in Italy.

Cortenuova 1237 lasts 24 turns each representing about two months, between August 1237 and August 1241. It opposes Ghibellines and their allies against the Guelphs and their allies over Italy.

  • The Ghibellines start in control of all of south Italy but their army starts in the north, in the lands controled by Emperor’s ally Ezzelino da Romano, poised to take control of insolent communes of the Po valley.
  • The Guelphs are spread out at the beginning but after consolidating their armies they stand a chance of putting a stop to Frederick’s ambitions.

The game's event cards allow full replay ability thanks to the numerous various situations that they create on the diplomatic, military, political or economical fields.
