Previously, an account to play multiplayer was required. That made verification of the user possible. However, to make multiplayer easier and to remove the dependence on a central verification server, accounts have been removed.
Existing players should not experience a change, new and guest player will be prompted to enter a character name.
Joining a friend works as usual.
