The gameplay of Inner Ashes: playing with memories

Inner Ashes

Inner Ashes is a first person, narrative, puzzle adventure, where the player puts himself in Henry's shoes, a forest guard diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer’s. He has to travel through his mind to discover why his only daughter Enid disappeared from his life.

Today we start our dev diary: In this installment of the development diary of Inner Ashes we are going to talk about a key section of the game: the gameplay. As you may already know, Inner Ashes is first and foremost a narrative adventure. This implies that the plot is of paramount importance, and the different aspects of the gameplay support this idea; everything we do, both main objectives and secondary collectibles, serves to learn more about Henry and Enid's story. You will begin the game in Henry's house; what in the initial stages of development started as just a kitchen now also includes a study and a large living room. We encourage you to investigate every detail of this setting, as the story of our protagonist is also told through photos, drawings and even everyday utensils. In addition, some elements will change as the adventure progresses, so that browsing through the different rooms will never be superfluous. Since his goal is to put his memories in order, it is inside his mind that he will have to find his way. Thus, dreamlike landscapes await you in which Henry's difficulties to remember take the form of different puzzles, from finding a key to reactivating a water mill, while facing a blizzard. Moreover, all these obstacles and the context in which they are presented are closely linked to the various symptoms of Alzheimer's that Henry suffers from. And how can you overcome these adversities? With an object that Henry uses in his daily life:post-its. These sticky notes, being ideal for remembering, will allow you to store the "essence" of certain objects and then use them in the right place. As for which objects, and which places, again the plot will be the central axis; Henry will talk to himself and remember conversations with other people, and in his words there will often be clues to solve the challenges he encounters. In his subconscious, these types of puzzles with geometric shapes will indicate particularly relevant memories; as you delve deeper into Henry's mind, their difficulty will increase, as will the importance of the revelations they conceal. In them there are also optional collectibles, so we encourage you to calmly explore the dreamlike scenarios that make up the mind of our protagonist. Who knows what information about his past you may find... We are looking forward to June 30 to enjoy Inner Ashes.
