Once again we'd like to welcome you to our weekly update, where we introduce a colorful menagerie of personalities, big and small, that Louise and Mitch encounter on their life-changing voyage through the USA in the 1960s. Today you will meet some members of Louise's family. Many say blood is thicker than water - but does the saying really hold true? Or is the full proverb version more akin to the truth - the blood of the covenant is thicker than the water of the womb? Louise’s elder sister. She is rather meek and tries to stay out of trouble as much as possible to preserve the somewhat shaky peace and quiet at the rural home ruled by her maternal grandfather and controlling mother. Her husband has fallen in Vietnam, and Kathy set up a small shrine to preserve his memory. She cares deeply for Butch, whom she tries to shield from further trauma, and explains away all his misbehavior, despite knowing in her heart of heart’s that what she is doing is not helpful. Kathy wishes she had believed Louise back in the day and done something else about her life. She has a ruthless streak in her when provoked, especially if the wellbeing of her family gets threatened. Despite the many years since Louise fled from their lives, Kathy is more than ready to help her out in a tough spot. Mitch’s cousin, twice his size and with a bully streak in him. He acts out and tries to get the attention of others through misbehavior but has a soft spot when talked to calmly and with reason. He doesn’t question things told to him by the adults in his life and knows he can count on his mother no matter what. Butch tries to live up to the expectations the small family has of him but fails. He deeply misses his father who died in the Vietnam War and tries to live the typical life of a pre-teen – with toy soldiers, comics, and Westerns.
So, which version of the saying holds true in your view?
