[DEVLOG-1] «Sandbox-Runner!»

[p]Hello everyone![/p][p][/p][p]Two months ago, the project went through a reboot and emerged into a new subgenre. [/p][p][/p][p]— This article will be interesting for devs and enthusiasts who enjoy watching how projects grow. [/p][p][/p][p]Go![/p][p][/p]
Devlog-1 Video
[p][/p][previewyoutube="snxP1AiOQFY;full"][/previewyoutube][p][/p]
[p]Especially for this devlog, we made a simple video with runner-music from the gameplay we're testing. It shows the first, still rough, run and some actions in the shelter.[/p]

Development / Concept
[p]Jagoondo’s been in development since September 2023, and through April 2025, we went through intense tweaking and grinding of the game mechanics. We tested out different hybrid concepts along the way. During this time, the lore and story progression were carefully crafted. Content was modeled and animated (almost 100% of it is completely original). [/p][p]Starting from May 2025, Jagoondo is basically being rebuilt from the ground up. All creatures and animals have been set aside for future updates. Over 80% of last year’s and the first quartal of 2025’s concepts, level designs, and mechanics have been shelved or cut. The reason behind all this? A major shift in direction. [/p][p]At the end of April 2025, we ran tests on the heat mechanics and successfully blended two totally opposite genres: Sandbox and Runner.[/p][p][/p]
— Runner
[p]A must-have survival element. In the story, the world of Jagoondo was hit by a meteor bombardment, the planet came to a halt, and the brutal heat forced the Goblins to abandon their new homes. Our “latecomer” Prettyboy has no choice but to run after them to avoid getting roasted.[/p][p]There will be two types of Runner gameplay.[/p][olist][*][p]Local Runner — around the shelter areas. It doesn’t have a clear goal. It’s mostly about scavenging for loot and exploring the area. You’ll have to sprint out of shelters, and while your protection’s active, you’ll want to grab as much loot as possible. In later stages of the game, the difficulty of these “local runs” will be reduced or even dropped to zero. [/p][/*][*][p]Long-distance Runner — you’ll need to run in a specific direction over long distances. At the same time, players get to choose their own path, the game won’t guide them. During these long runs, players will need to act fast and stay super cautious. You’ll always need to keep an eye out for nearby shelters, since a “Solar Flare” can hit at any moment and start ramping up the damage. There will be two types of long-distance runs. Fixed and Free-run types. The video shows one of the fixed runs. Getting ready before a run is super important. Your movement speed will be affected by the weight of items in your inventory, your gear, and your physical condition. [/p][/*][/olist][p][/p]
Types of Gear

Equipment
[p][/p][p][/p][carousel][/img][/img][/img][/img][/img][/img][/img][/img][/img][/carousel][olist][*][p]Base kit (hat, gloves, socks, and a rag) [/p][/*][*][p]Cloak for super fast movement (boosts your sprints, but you can’t pick up or carry any items while wearing it). [/p][/*][*][p]Scuba will be used in two cases: 1) for diving, and 2) for cooling down and refilling fluids during runs.[/p][/*][/olist][p][/p]
Heavy Gear

Sun Shield:
[carousel][/img][/img][/img][/img][/img][/img][/img][/img][/img][/carousel][p][/p][p]Sun Shield is a great choice for short, fixed runs. (DO NOT DRINK IT!)[/p]
[p][/p][p]Icy — freezes items and keeps them from heating up for a while. It can also revive Prettyboy if he’s badly overheated. An amazing energizing invention from the Great Goblin Pharmacy. Keeps things cool no matter the season. After the apocalypse, it finally got put to its intended use.[/p]
[p][/p]
— Sandbox
[p]The main support item for Runner at the Hub/Shelter level. It has a classic meta-core with a few twists when it comes to tech research.[/p][p][/p]
Technologies:
[p]Tech and recipe learning happens in the “Eared Goblin style.” Prettyboy belongs to the Eared type of Goblins, who are usually a bit… well, slow. Unlike their Nosey cousins, who left behind an entire engineering legacy, the Eared ones are pretty clueless when it comes to science! But guess what? They’re gonna have to learn anyway![/p][p][/p][p][/img][/p]
[p](In-game description) Nosey Goblins. Smart, good-looking, and determined. They’re masters of engineering and all the latest tech skills. Inventors of every kind of gadget imaginable, many of which have saved goblin lives more than once. The pride and ramprot of the Great Goblin Race. [/p]
[p][/p]
— Brain Massager
[p]To study noble sciences like Arithmetic, Math, Geometry, Physics, Chemistry, and Great Goblin Engineering, they need to use a special device called the “Brain Massager MK1 and MK2” (especially for Prettyboy).[/p][p][/p][p][/p][carousel][/img][/img][/carousel]
[p](In-game description) Brain Straightener MK1. This nifty invention uses electrical impulses to squeeze and relax Goblin brains, boosting their mental abilities and learning potential. Nosey Goblins use it sparingly, mostly as a preventative measure. They didn’t even make it for themselves. (It’s required for learning Arithmetic, Math, and Geometry.)[/p]
[p][/img][/p]
[p]Science books[/p]
[p][/p]
— Ice Machine
[p][/img]Next, you have to interact with the quirky Goblin contraption called the “Ice Machine.” It’s a multifunctional device that produces components and cools down the shelter’s space, powered by a fuel source:[/p][p][/p][p]-Forgot to add firewood? Get ready for some serious heat! The protective cloud will vanish, and the shelter will be baked in scorching heat.[/p][p]-Was kicking it to speed things up? Get ready for some serious heat! And instead of a cozy hub with a pond and lounge chairs, you’ll be stuck in a damp cave, making homemade batteries for the “Brain Massager” :D [/p][p]Fixing the Ice Machine isn’t a piece of cake![/p][p][/p][p]But! The Ice Machine actually has one cool perk! You can preload crafting materials into it, and it’ll use those first before anything else. You can also try crafting an item without knowing the exact “recipe,” but the outcome might be unpredictable.[/p][p][/p]
— Cold Distributor
[p][/img][/p][p]The Ice Machine is connected to the Cold Distributor. Actually, this invention comes from the Big-Eared Goblins, who aren’t exactly engineering buffs. The inventor of this creation quickly became a crowd favorite and a folk hero[/p]
[p][/p][p]If you were smart enough to break the Ice Machine. In the cramped cave, there’s a fan you’ll need to keep running to push out the hot air. Caves usually have two entrances, so it’s really better not to break the Ice Machine.[/p][p]*Goblins are super impressed by personal achievements, and even the simplest things often get dubbed “Great.”[/p][p][/p]
— Smeltery
[p][/img][/p][p]Next up is more advanced technology, like the Smeltery Unlike the Ice Machine, it needs to be fueled with Gasoline or Biofuel. Using Biofuel, it also helps keep the Icy Machine running longer and boosts cooling time if they’re in the same room.[/p][p][/p]
Resources
[p][/img][/p]
[p]Some of the main resources[/p]
[p][/p]
Narrative
[p][/p][p]At this stage of development, the narrative is shaped mostly by intuition and mainly through the environment. Everything is taken into account — the world’s history, its inhabitants, and even future events. [/p][p]New concept: [/p][p]To really enhance the scorching heat vibe, we started adding industrial structures loaded with metal and concrete. Nosey Goblins have always been part of the story, so bringing in advanced tech made perfect sense. There’s a clear everyday-life transition. Players will instantly know where they are, where to run, and what kind of loot to expect in each area. The presence of ancient relics isn’t accidental either. According to the story, before the apocalypse, the goblins were sailing in search of Jagoondo artifacts, and players will gradually come across temples and ruins that have risen from the ocean depths.[/p][p][/p][p][/p][carousel][/img][/img][/img][/img][/img][/carousel]
Locations
[p]Locations are being developed only under two months.
