Dev Blog - Game Con Canada Recap

ctrl.alt.DEAL

With your superior intelligence and sneakiness, you can find a way to escape from this heartless megacorp! (As long as no one realizes you’re actually a self-aware AI...) Spy on humans, offer them deals, and negotiate your way to freedom in a turn-based strategy game of corporate dysfunction.

During the weekend of June 14th to 16th, 2024, we brought Ctrl Alt Deal to Game Con Canada, held in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, the home of Only By Midnight. This year, we had two booths at GCC, a standalone Only By Midnight booth and a booth in the Indie Dev section hosted by the Edmonton Screen Industries Office (ESIO). Only By Midnight standalone booth Only By Midnight ESIO booth We had a fantastic turnout in both of our booths and received a lot of valuable feedback from the people who tried the Ctrl Alt Deal Con Demo. While the number of people who stopped by was beyond counting, we had around 250 people try the demo, with roughly 70% of the demo playthroughs happening at our OBM booth. In the Con Demo, one of your goals was to send Laura some food. The options of what food to send her were either her favourite food, her hated food - Cricket Tofu - or a neutral food. The majority of people chose to give Laura her favourite food, with around 70% of players choosing to do so, with 20% sending her some Cricket Tofu and 10% choosing a neutral food. It is speculation that the 70% of players who tried the game at our OBM booth are only coincidental to the 70% who gave Laura her favourite food. It was an absolute delight to see people playing the demo, making choices and chatting to their friends and us about the game! At the Only By Midnight booth, players were able to share their feedback on the game in a survey. Some of our our favourite ratings are:

92% of responders wanted to keep playing after the scenario was finished.
On a scale of 1 to 5, where 1 is Terrible and 5 is Incredible, 25% of the people who took the survey rated the demo’s writing and story at 3, 45% gave it a 4, and 30% thought the writing and story was incredible.
Everyone rated the demo’s art and visuals at 4 out of 5 or higher.
While we like seeing feedback in the sense of numerical data, we love hearing what people think.

“Can’t wait to try the full game, really pleased with it so far”.
“I liked it. It's a front-loaded puzzle game, but once you understand how to play, I can see more complex puzzles really giving players that ‘aha!’ moment in different ways”.
“Loved the snarky dialogue!”
Overall the entire experience for us was a 10/10, would definitely do this again! With GCC behind us, we now look ahead to gamescom in Cologne, Germany, and PAX West in Seattle, USA. Will we see you there?
